EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
