Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio
The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to determine if progress is being made or imploding.
Matteo's Unforeseen Return
A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
